About this place
Spicy aromas rising from gravy pots and a light, smooth sauce have made Karikaru a familiar stop on the basement level of Shimbashi Ekimae Building No. 1. Established in 1958, the counter blends the quick convenience of a stand with distinct, layered spice.
The signature Indian-style curry features chunks of chicken, tender potatoes, and mushrooms in a fluid sauce with heat that builds steadily with each mouthful. With the Indian katsu curry, sauce poured over a crisp, piping-hot cutlet straight from the pot creates a satisfying contrast between crunch and spice. The sunny-side fried egg version is another long-running favourite, with its runny yolk helping to mellow the heat.
In contrast to the lively Indian-style gravy, the thicker Western-style roux is rich, mellow, and reminiscent of classic yoshoku cooking. Diners wishing to sample both can opt for half-and-half, bringing 2 gravies onto the plate together. Fried onions and fukujinzuke pickles set out on the counter add crunch and savoury notes throughout the meal.
Arranged primarily around counter seats, the dining space turns over briskly. It suits busy lunches as well as evening dinners or an unhurried bite to round off a drink.
